ESU-SF Scholarships -
    British Universities Summer School Scholarship

The San Francisco branch of the English-Speaking Union invites San Francisco Bay Area secondary school teachers to apply for our British Universities Summer School Scholarship to the University of Oxford, the Shakespeare Globe Center, or the Scottish Universities Summer School at the University of Edinburgh. Courses offered include English literature, creative writing, and teaching Shakespeare.

The opportunity to become a student through the British University Summer School (BUSS) program energizes teachers and allows them to bring back to the classroom a broader educational perspective. The San Francisco Branch offers a full three-week scholarship that includes accommodation plus a transportation allowance.

The deadline for submitting the completed application forms and supporting documents is Friday, February 19th. All documentation is to be submitted to the ESU office! You may FAX your application to the ESU office at 415.362.6991.

Intending applicants should bear in mind that all offerings are designed as intensive university-level study programs. Participants will be expected to attend all lectures and relevant seminars, and should be confident that they are academically prepared. The Globe course further requires that you will be in robust good health as many exercises have a physical component.

University of Oxford (Oxford)

  • English Literature: July 4 - 24, 2010
    Ranging from the splendors of Medieval and Renaissance literature to the exciting diversity of contemporary British fiction, this program offers insights into six productive centuries of English Literature.

  • Creative Writing: July 25 - August 14, 2010
    This program is for those wishing to explore and enhance their ability as a writer of prose fiction, poetry, and/or scripts for stage or screen.

  • History, Politics and Society: July 4 - 24, 2010
    This program offers a range of courses in History, Politics and Sociology of Britain and Europe, from modern British politics to the dramatic changes in post-Soviet Russia and the evolution of the European Union.

The Shakespeare Globe Centre (London)

  • Teaching Shakespeare Through Performance: July 2010
    The program includes lectures by members of the Globe's artistic staff, master teachers, scholars and theater practitioners from Britain, as well as guest workshop leaders in theater and education from other English-speaking countries. The emphasis of the course will be on the experiential and transformational nature of the work done at and on the Globe stage and its impact upon teaching and presenting Shakespeare.

Scottish Universities' International Summer School (Edinburgh)

  • Text and Context: British Literature from 1900 to the Present
    • Modernism: July 12 - 24, 2010
    • Scottish Literature: July 26 - August 7, 2010
    • Contemporary Literature: August 9 - 21, 2010

    This course, conducted at the University of Edinburgh in conjunction with the Universities of Aberdeen, Dundee, Glasgow and the Open University of Scotland, presents an overview of twentieth century literature which seeks to understand British and Scottish culture against a background of social and political change.

  • Creative Writing: August 3 - 21, 2010
    This course provides a unique opportunity to experience Scotland's vibrant writing culture. The intensive three-week course provides experience in a wide range of genres, including fiction, poetry, drama, life-writing and translation. It offers developing writers a dynamic and supportive environment in which to hone and develop their skills.

    students will have the opportunity to enjoy Edinburgh's International Book festival and attend private workshops led by established writers.

DOCUMENTATION:

The following documentation will be required from applicants.

  1. The completed application form.
  2. A brief personal statement (400 words) explaining your academic preparation for the course work, the goal you hope to achieve by attending the chosen program, and how you might apply the experience for the benefit of your students. Applicants for the Globe Centre are required to confine their experience to the teaching or production of Shakespeare.
  3. A current curriculum vitae.
  4. Two letters of recommendation, one from an academic supervisor or principal.
  5. A request for university credit, if applicable.
  6. A sample of prose or drama (3,000 word maximum) or of poetry (50 lines maximum) if applying for the Creative Writing program.

The deadline for applications is Friday, February 19th!

Failure to meet this deadline will result in the automatic disqualification of the candidate. NOTE: All documentation is to be submitted to our office regardless of the instructions on the various University websites! Applications may be mailed to our office (391 Sutter Street, Suite 612, San Francisco, CA 94108) or dropped off during normal business hours. If the office is closed, please use the mail slot in the door. Please do not send them with signature required. Doing so may delay receipt of your application.
